"Last year was a year of exploring doing business with my voice more intentionally. I had been only practicing for my own personal growth (tbh not THAT much) and increasing my knowledge to be able to teach voice more fluently and masterfully. But then, I got a wedding gig and my whole routine changed. I prepared for months and put in a lot of work to that ONLY ONE gig I had at the time. I was nervous I would self-sabotage during the gig but the results of the months of preparation and practice (and counseling during one-on-one check ins with Darlene Yam) really made a huge difference.
I am now more convinced that talent only gets you so far but practice and intentional work really does a whole other thing to your brain that shows itself as the main difference in doing an average presentation and a successful one. I've learned that when I'm following a karaoke track on youtube and it's a song I haven't heard or sung in quite a while, I tend to focus too much on where the lyrics light up on the screen instead of just listening to the music and the beat.
