Omg, THANK YOU! This is a nice bright light at the end of a tunnel. I haven't been singing, except here and there for videos, and have been noticing that what used to be effortless for me, becoming a struggle. Someone casually said, "well, you are 61, and voices stop being good when you age". That comment has been under my skin for a week, but today, I found you and your channel and my hope has been restored. I appreciate these exercises and particularly enjoy your coaching style. I've subscribed! Thank you so much!!
@SingerLucieWalker
Good day sir. I’ve been studying voice via the YouTube loop for many years. lol. Of course there is not one method that works for all. But I just have to say I really love what you do. Leaning into sensation, your pace, clear and accurate tuition. Big love to you.
To any beginners, if you like what you see here, stay here.
This gentleman knows this instrument well.
Try to limit yourself to a couple of couches that resonate with you.

Thank you so much for these exercises John. I've subscribed to your channel. I'm 76 and have been singing off & on for some time. Been following a few vocal coaches, as well. I was wondering if you think using a 'singing straw' in vocal exercises is good for our older, vocal folds? I use a 3 or 4 mm size straw, when I do those exercises - with an online coach.
@davidpatrickcox3004
Dude! Where have you been all my age!?! 🤣🤣 I've been a singer all of my life (66 y. o.). Pandemic killed my community theater group in '20, so no more singing. Then they sent me home from the office, so no more speaking either... My voice went to nothing. NOTHING! Retired now. I picked up a voice coach in January and she is lovely, but about the age of my kids. It's great to have guidance from someone who can relate directly. SUBSCRIBED! Give me more, please!
@mattlevault5140
This video has made my day! I'm so grateful for your generosity in sharing these wonderful exercises. As someone who has gone back into the stage post 50, I appreciate these tips enormously. 🙏
@soniastreet4964
Thank you for your book. It was a very nice surprise. The Y and W explanations were new to me. I am age 76. I stopped singing to become the care-taker of my Mom, Dad, Sister and Husband. Two years ago I started practicing singing with online teachers.
Many of your exercises are new to me. I will be back.

Hi John... I'm 64 and from Scotland and have just discovered your channel. Feeling really encouraged, so thank you. I have a folk/crooner style of voice (think Bruce Cockburn/ Jim Reeves et al). I was categorised as Baritone, but secretly I also had a separate voice that enjoved singing in the range/style of Roger Hodgson from Supertramp as an example. Suffice to say 'Never the twain would meet!'
I don't have the range I once had (at least at the upper level) but I'm now trying to integrate them. I presume that's what you mean by my mix voice. I get the feeling you help. Thanks again.
@foxdenham
I've had a few singing teachers over the years. None of them explain this. They just give you scales to warm up and practice, but don't tell you actually how to sing. I gave up and figured it out by watching many videos such as this one. Eventually higher notes fell into place, but only after years of practice. Thank you.
@lozreeve2780
This is brilliant; thank you SO much! I've always been a good singer but, at the age of 56, the hard times we live in have led me to try busking to help make ends meet (just me, my backing tracks, a decent portable amp, and a really good mic). My voice is suddenly more valuable to me than ever so I'm working hard to keep it in good shape. This is the first vocal exercise I've seen that's specifically for the more mature voice and I'm so pleased to have found it. I sing two hours at a time four days a week and, even counting the bad days (particularly the days when someone's already claimed the most lucrative spot in my local city centre), I manage to make an average of £100 a week, which pays for all my groceries, feeds my electricity meter, and there's some left over.
In the back of my mind, there's always the concern that my age is against me and I won't be able to sustain this amount of (I've been told, pro-level) singing for very long. You've alleviated this worry and made me feel more confident that I've taken the right path by making singing a part of my livelihood (especially as it lifts people's spirits and makes them smile).
@rmoriarty569
My best results came from you showing people how to use the voice singing or speaking in all different notes or sounds, which in my humble opinion is giving my voice the great workout that it needs.
Talking about this technical stuff loses me, but i love what i have got from your videos.
Im still struggling with the high powerful head notes. That Presley can reach on some of his songs. Im trying hard to sing them but failing, in private of course. In public I avoid the songs.
Question. With practise will my voice range get there.???
I do have a good powerful voice, when its needed..
PS.
I commented before I looked at all the video and listened 😊
So in a word I think it's brilliant what you're showing me thank you very much

"I appreciate that our guiding mentor really cares this much about both his craft and his students that he keeps finding more ways to add value to his product, rather than just making a static site and sitting back! This is certainly displayed by the awesome interactive features available in VoiceSchool.com otherwise, of course, but these little additions are good reminders."

"Great tips. This is worth the price of admission alone! I also will simply hum and not even vocalize at all if I am tired. This seems to work for me."

"Finished this last week but I've been busy getting prepared to do it again for the month of November! The biggest benefits from the past 30 days are clarity of where to go from here. I've got my Now-Next-Necessary done from the Accountability training, a folder with my calendar, exercises, and notes easily accessible to make the most use of my time, and goals I feel good about that will build my confidence instead of drowning in a sea of 'I need to work on EVERYTHING!'"

"Thrilled about this new course in Imagery and Movement! I've been in many different & high-stress careers (and industries) over time. Needed years of bodywork to clear tension, and deeply heal from multiple burnouts. Grateful that it's now primed me to sing more effectively, just as you're sharing the latest thinking/science on the connection between body, mind, and voice! 💜✌️"

About the "Imagery & Movement" Course
"I love my voice when I mean/feel what I am singing, I listen back and can't believe it's me when there is emotion there - I have a great connection when it IS connected!!! I love that I have around a 3 Octave range but need to work on not having different voices in different registers sometimes (especially when copying someone) and finally I really like the discoveries studying it has helped me to make, such as finding this wonderful resource!"

Responding to John Henny's prompt "Name three things you like about your voice" in the forum
"I've begun going through the link from John up above. I'm only on page 8 at the moment, but IMHO, it's written well and is making sense. It is really great that if/when I come to something I have a question about I know I can come here and ask! That's BIG. I've always needed someone to hold my hand lightly and I got that sense yesterday in the Meet Up. Thanks so much!"
